
Dr. Cameron "Cameron" Helvey
Dr. Cameron Helvey is the Associate Head of School and has been a part of the Oakwood School community since its founding in 1998. His formal educational journey began in Junior Kindergarten through 9th Grade and he graduated high school from Pinewood School in Los Altos, California. Dr. Helvey received his Bachelor of Science in Teaching Social Science with a minor in History Teaching from Brigham Young University where he also simultaneously received a minor in Nonprofit Business Management from BYU’s Marriott School of Management. He later attended Columbia University Teachers College, Graduate School of Education, completing his Master of Arts in Teaching of Social Studies with an emphasis in educational leadership. In 2021, Dr. Helvey was named a James Madison Senior Fellow at Georgetown University, a prestigious award for high school teachers, recognizing his expertise in constitutional history, government, and politics. He is also a distinguished graduate of Peabody College of Education at Vanderbilt University, having received his Ed.D. (Doctor of Education) in K-12 Educational Leadership and Policy.
Before returning to Oakwood in the Summer of 2024, Dr. Helvey served as the Dean of Students at St. Andrew’s-Sewanee School (SAS) in Tennessee, a boarding and day school with students in grades 6-12 on a 550-acre campus. At SAS, he managed a team of dedicated faculty and staff in the following areas: residential life, student leadership, advisory and grade-level programming, student health and wellness, student support and retention, as well as responsibilities in faculty recruitment and evaluation, admissions, development, athletics, and strategic leadership.
Prior to his tenure at SAS, he worked at The Hun School of Princeton in New Jersey as the Associate Director of Resident Life, was a grade level advisor, and was part of the History and Global Studies Faculty, teaching AP U.S. Government and Politics, Constitutional Law & American Society, and U.S. History. Dr. Helvey has also taught at Pinewood School, Clifford International School (Guangzhou, China), and American Fork High School. Additionally, he was a head boys basketball coach at both SAS and The Hun School and an assistant girls volleyball coach, coaching with his wife at Clifford International School. Dr. Helvey has also been part of the Oakwood staff at various times and in various roles since 2006, including serving as Assistant Director of Summer Programs, Summer Instructor, IT Specialist, New Construction Building Committee member, and a member of the Facilities Team.
Dr. Helvey and his wife, Mckenzie, have four children, and live in Morgan Hill where they enjoy biking, hiking, swimming, playing at the local parks, going to the downtown Farmers’ Market, and cheering on the local professional sports teams (especially the 49ers and the Giants). He is a frequent volunteer with local, national, and global nonprofit organizations and is a Certified Nonprofit Professional (CNP) by the Nonprofit Leadership Alliance. He is also fluent in Portuguese, having lived in Brazil for two years as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
