Taylor Andre '18
Oakwood Alumni Taylor Andre ‘18 is a self-made man who has already achieved more than most ever will. His life has followed a fascinating trajectory that has taken him from his early years tinkering with toys to soaring heights maintaining roller coasters. With a degree in Economics, exploring the intersection of engineering and adrenalin, it is fair to say that Taylor took an unconventional route and turned his passion for mechanics into a fun and fulfilling profession.
Seeking out opportunities and welcoming responsibilities; Taylor has created a pathway straight to the top of his field. First apprenticing as a millwright at California’s Great America, Taylor literally climbed his way up the ladder to foreman, accountable for the entire night shift of ride technicians at the park. Work-life balance is important and to have time for his new bride, he has opted for more regular hours, now working as an Industrial Technician at Six Flags in Vallejo. Not sitting on his laurels, Taylor has added entrepreneur to his title. He has identified a niche market and is starting his own business providing heavy equipment overhaul. Construction is underway with his Commercial Driver's License and a semi-truck in hand, he is building his future with intention.
Remaining completely humble, Taylor acknowledges that the skills and values that he was raised with have influenced his journey. Chief amongst them was the foundation he received at Oakwood where he declares that he "learned how to learn". With this simple but profound statement, Taylor has drawn a straight line back to the institution that encouraged him, held him responsible, and showed him what he could achieve by embracing challenges. These key factors have proven beneficial to him at university and now in his career.
Taylor is aware that what he has accomplished at such a young age is unique. He is also conscientious that his story could inspire others. In the Spring of 2024, Taylor showed his appreciation for Oakwood by giving back. The senior class was the lucky beneficiary of his wisdom. Taylor relayed his evolution in an Advisory session and in doing so made a big impression on what is possible when one perseveres. He notably emphasized the importance of being open-minded when making crucial decisions. Students drew connections to Taylor's experiences and how his choices led him to success and who he is today: a self-made married man with a favorable job.
