Oakwood School 6th grade students recently returned from an unforgettable week exploring the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Their journey was part of an immersive environmental science program led by NatureBridge, a long-standing nonprofit dedicated to outdoor education. The experience supported Oakwood Middle School’s science curriculum by offering students an engaging, real-world connection to what they’ve learned in the classroom.

Throughout the week, students ventured on a variety of hikes—including a challenging trek to Hawks Hill, a reflective mile-long solo walk, and an exciting night hike under the stars. One of the highlights was an exclusive visit to the San Francisco lighthouse, a historic site normally closed to the public.

Students also dove into marine biology through hands-on lab work, discovering the intricate and often surprising life beneath the waves. Every activity offered a chance to better understand the local ecosystem and appreciate the natural beauty of the Bay Area coastline.

NatureBridge has been inspiring students through national park-based programs for over five decades. Its mission—to foster environmental stewardship by connecting young people with nature—was clearly embraced by Oakwood’s students, who showed enthusiasm, curiosity, and collaboration throughout the trip.

Faculty and students alike called the experience a resounding success. The program not only enriched academic learning but also fostered teamwork, resilience, and a deeper appreciation for the environment
