Ella Gutierrez, Class of 2025

On Friday, September 27, the AP Spanish class, and a few guests, went to San Martin Gwinn Elementary School to volunteer with their “Loteria y Juegos” night! This was a great opportunity for the group to do some community service, and also celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month! Because this school is dual-immersion, meaning classes are held in both English and Spanish, there were lots of Spanish-speaking families to help out! As soon as they arrived, the boys, Arnav Praveen, Aadjot Sidhu, and Mateo Juarez, were requested to be at the obstacle course. There, they were able to practice their Spanish with the kids by collecting their tickets, giving them countdowns, and making sure they all had a safe enjoyable time. In the meantime, Ella Gutierrez and Diana Rodriguez spent the majority of their time running the ticket-selling table. The two of them were the only ones who were able to help the Spanish-speaking families, and they had a great time knowing that they were able to make them feel heard. After the group’s time at San Martin Gwinn, Profesora Dehpanah took them to Burritos, Tacos, y Mas, where everyone ordered their food in Spanish, and they all sat at a table talking about the rewarding day of volunteering they had (in Español, of course)!
