Oakwood School was delighted to welcome author Martha McNiel to campus for a special visit with Elementary School students. Mrs. McNiel, director of DreamPower Horsemanship, a nonprofit that offers animal-assisted psychotherapy, shared her passion for both animals and storytelling with students.

Mrs. McNiel is the author of the beloved books Sir Herald Rucker and Poppy and Daisy’s Big Adventure. During her visit, she read Sir Herald Rucker to Kindergarten through 5th grade students. To make the experience even more memorable, she was joined by two licensed therapy dogs from Operation Freedom Paws, who brought plenty of smiles to campus. After the reading, students had the opportunity to meet and pet the therapy dogs.

In the afternoon, Mrs. McNiel led a special writers workshop for fourth and 5th grade students. She discussed the editing process involved in creating a book and read excerpts from Poppy and Daisy’s Big Adventure, inspiring students to explore their own creative writing.

To conclude the day, each student received a copy of one of Martha McNiel’s books to take home. Oakwood School is grateful to Mrs. McNiel for sharing her time, talents, and wonderful animal companions with the community.
