Oakwood Middle School’s hens are settling in, and the first eggs have arrived. Redwood, one of the chicks raised by the Spring 2025 Ag Lab students, laid her first eggs this week. Chickens typically begin laying at five to six months old, so Redwood, who hatched in mid-April, is right on schedule. Salt and Sugar, the two white chicks hatched from Trader Joe’s eggs at the end of May, are still too young to lay. Once mature, healthy hens lay eggs every 24 to 26 hours. Ag Lab eggs will be used in the Middle School Culinary Club’s first cooking activity, offering students a fresh farm-to-fork learning experience.
