Electronic Circuits Make Waves in Calculus Class
Oakwood High School students in Mr. Hashem’s Calculus class received a crash course in electrical engineering followed by an interactive demonstration of how the principles they are learning in class appear in real-world applications. Two electronic circuits were designed to emulate the calculus operations of differentiation and integration, a waveform generator was used to produce the input signal for the circuit, and an oscilloscope was used to view the output signal from the circuit. Based on their knowledge of these calculus operations, students were then able to compare the expected result to the result that the oscilloscope was displaying. Students had the opportunity to play with various knobs and switches to see how their actions would change both the input and output signals. This activity demonstrated how electrical engineers use electronic components to manipulate voltage and current flow for different electronic applications. Special thanks to Mr. Lyle for providing equipment and counsel!
