Exploring Medieval Europe: Fourth Grade Students Dive into Feudalism with Skittles Simulation

Oakwood School 4th grade students immersed themselves in the world of Medieval Europe this week, gaining insights into the workings of feudalism through an engaging hands-on activity. Each student was randomly assigned a role as King, Noble, Vassal, or Peasant and provided with 10 Skittles, which symbolized essential goods like crops. As they explored a chapter detailing feudalism, they learned how "vassals" could acquire land known as "a fief" by pledging allegiance to a king or lord.

This activity allowed the "peasants" to experience firsthand the inherent injustices of feudalism. Every peasant had to contribute a portion of their Skittles to their Vassals, who, in turn, had to pass a portion to their Nobles, ultimately culminating in contributions to the King. In the end, the King amassed 33 Skittles, the Nobles had 29 each, the Vassals had 12, and the Peasants were left with only 4 of their original 10 Skittles.

Following this eye-opening exercise, the students delved deeper into the subject by asking questions and openly expressing their feelings about the inequitable system. It was evident that they all gained a better understanding of feudalism through this experiential learning.
