Following a memorable field trip to Mission Santa Cruz, Oakwood School 4th grade students continued their learning back in the classroom through an engaging group project that focused on reflection and deeper understanding. Working in small groups, students took time to think about what they had learned during the trip and explored the many ways the Ohlone and Yokut people lived, worked, and adapted at the Santa Cruz Mission. Each group focused on a different topic and worked together to discuss and prepare a presentation for the class. Some students explored what daily life was like at the mission, including the work the Ohlone and Yokut people were expected to do and how their routines changed over time. Others investigated the role the Ohlone and Yokut people played in building and maintaining the mission, learning about the important skills they used in farming, construction, cooking, and craftsmanship. Another group studied the mission buildings and architecture, while others looked closely at religion, culture, and the ways Native American traditions were affected during the mission period. One of the most meaningful parts of the project was when students shared what surprised them the most. Many were amazed by how much work the Ohlone and Yokut people were expected to do each day, while others were surprised to learn how their traditions and daily lives changed after the mission was built. The thoughtful discussions that followed showed how much students had grown in their understanding of California history. Through teamwork, reflection, and presentations, the project helped students connect what they learned during the field trip to a deeper understanding of the people who lived at the mission. It was wonderful to see the students working together, asking thoughtful questions, and sharing new knowledge with confidence.
