The Oakwood High School JV Girls Volleyball team started off the season strong this week, defeating St. Abraham’s in straight sets 2-0 in a match played at Oakwood School.

The Hawks took control early in the first set, thanks to strong serves from freshman Avani Kumar and several key defensive plays by freshman Anayeli Mendoza. Their dominance continued as they cruised to a 25-12 win in the opening set.

St. Abraham’s came out strong in the second set, but the Hawks regained momentum through clutch plays by sophomore Gabriella Zelenyak and freshman Ria Deshpande. Oakwood sealed the match with a 25-13 victory in the second set, completing the sweep.

According to Oakwood Coach Alyssa Sugai, several standout players helped lead the team to victory. "This was a great home opener and way to kick off the season! Avani had two really great service runs that helped us get big leads in both sets. Ava Smith gained so much confidence and was covering so much court in the front row. And Gabriella was a great leader today, stepping into a new position and constantly providing the girls around her with energy and confidence. Each and every player contributed on the court and helped us get the win, I am extremely proud of their effort and how they played. I am excited to see more of their success throughout the season!"

We look forward to seeing fans at the Hawks' next home game on Tuesday, September 3, when they take on North Monterey County at 5 pm.
