Hands-On History for 3rd Grade at Chitactac-Adams Park
Third grade students at Oakwood School made meaningful connections to their Earliest Americans studies with a visit to Chitactac-Adams Park. By exploring the land of the Amah Mutsun people, students had the opportunity to experience history firsthand. They discovered tribal petroglyphs and learned about the importance of storytelling in a culture. They also observed how the Amah Mutsun people thrived by using natural resources, crafting tools from materials found in their environment, and showing respect for the plants and animals around them. Students used mortars and pestles to grind acorns and played a traditional game of staves, just as the Amah Mutsun people once did. It was an engaging way to bring history to life and deepen their understanding.
