Oakwood School kindergarten students in Room 26 recently had the opportunity to learn about Nowruz, the Persian New Year celebration. Kinder parent Mrs. Rahill Mirlohi shared the traditions her family follows throughout the 13-day celebration. The festivities begin with jumping over fire, a symbolic act to leave behind negativity and step into the new year with positive energy and good health.

Mrs. Mirlohi explained the significance of the number seven and the letter "S" in the Haftseen table, which represents hope for the new year. Some of the traditional items displayed included samanu (sweet pudding), seer (garlic), sabzeh (sprouts), and sekkeh (coins). A highlight of the display was a pair of goldfish, symbolizing new life, which the students enjoyed seeing in person.

The students also learned that Nowruz includes visiting elder family members in exchange for eydi (gifts of money). The presentation concluded with a short animated Mickey Mouse clip, bringing joy to the young learners. To make the experience even more special, each student received a thoughtful gift bag to take home and share their newfound knowledge of Nowruz with their families.

A big thank you to Mrs. Mirlohi for this meaningful and engaging presentation!
