Kindergarten Pumpkin STEM Challenge and Liquid Experiment
After reading and acting out the 5 Little Pumpkins poem/song, Oakwood School Kindergarten students were given a STEM challenge to create a gate for 5 candy pumpkins. Students were given popsicle sticks of different sizes and clothes pins to make a gate. Once their gate was constructed, teachers brought along some wind (a fan) to see if their gate continued to keep the pumpkins up.
Next, we recycled the candy pumpkins and used them in a liquid experiment. One pumpkin candy was placed into a jar of 4 different liquids: water, soda, vinegar, and vegetable oil. Students made predictions about what might happen to each pumpkin. Some students predicted the pumpkin would disappear, expand, lose its color, or become slimy.
