Oakwood Boys JV Basketball Wins Two Holiday Tournament Championships

The Oakwood High School Boys JV Basketball team showcased their talent and determination by participating in two basketball tournaments over the holiday break. Competing against strong teams from across the region, the Hawks demonstrated their dominance by winning both tournaments and earning two championship titles.

The success began with the Gonzales High School Tournament, where the Hawks claimed the championship last weekend. Oakwood dominated the competition, winning all three games by an average margin of victory of 32 points. In the Championship game, the Hawks faced off against Greenfield High School and came away with a 61-37 win. The Hawks were led by Freshman Joey Maggi and Lochlan Ezzell, who were named co-MVPs of the tournament. Ezzell led the Hawks in scoring by averaging 17 points a game, and Maggi led the team in steals, rebounds, and assists.

The Hawks carried their momentum into the Watsonville High School Basketball Tournament, where they secured their second championship of the break on Monday by defeating Alvarez High School 69-15 in the title game. Oakwood started strong, building a commanding 42-5 halftime lead. Freshman Shaan Gill shone in the opening quarter, scoring 12 of his 16 total points in the first half, while Sophomore Michael Pereira matched his effort with 12 of his 16 total points in the first quarter as well. Freshman Lochlan Ezzell also contributed 16 points in the game. Pereira emerged as a leader on both ends of the court during the Watsonville tournament, averaging 16 points per game across three victories and earning tournament MVP honors.

With these two championship victories, the Hawks remain undefeated at 12-0 on the season. They aim to carry their momentum into league play, which begins on January 9. Full schedules can be found on the Oakwood Athletics calendar.
