Rishona Jain and Clara Shem-Tov, Class of 2026

This past Saturday, members of the Oakwood High School Bridge Club competed in our first-ever bridge tournament at the Palo Alto Bridge Center, where we played with finesse. We started by learning how to use the bidding boxes and making our first convention cards. As more people started showing up to the tournament, we checked in and found our table. Our first opponents “first started playing bridge in the late eighteenth century, when they played strong twos”.

We were playing in a 0-99 masterpoints category so most of our opponents were also learning. In between rounds, we also met one of the directors, who had been managing these tournaments since Mr. Berniker played in them in high school -- she ever remembered him! After playing 18 hands in three and a half hours, we got the results and finished in 8th place.

Playing in the tournament was a great experience. We are excited to continue learning more about playing this game, and we look forward to competing again at the NABCs in San Francisco in November, hopefully with more members (join our club!).
