On Thursday, August 14, 2025, cheers, smiles, and school spirit filled the air as the Oakwood community gathered to celebrate the grand opening of the upgraded and reimagined Oakwood Playfield!

Guests enjoyed remarks from Michelle Helvey, Head of School; Dr. Cameron Helvey, Associate Head of School; and Ted Helvey about the history of the field. Once plagued by gopher and squirrel holes, patchy grass, and a bumpy blacktop-to-field transition, the Playfield has been transformed into a safe, vibrant, and versatile hub for athletics, play, and connection. Now ready for students from preschool through 12th grade, it will host everything from recess and PE classes to athletic practices, after-school programs, and spirited community events. It is a space built for teamwork, movement, and joyful memories—for today’s students and for generations of Hawks to come.

The celebration honored the many families whose generosity through Annual Fund, Fund Run, and Auction campaigns made the project possible, as well as Kent Construction for their expert work and the school leaders who championed it from vision to reality—Coach Kort Jensen, Athletic Director; Melissa Goulart, Administrative Director; and Melissa Barrow, Director of Development & Alumni Relations. Students were recognized for their patience during the extended construction, and then came the moment everyone was waiting for: distinguished alumna Lydia Sattler ’21, a recent Stephen F. Austin State University graduate and women’s soccer goalie, kicked the very first goal—defended by none other than Thunder the Hawk!

With laughter and cheers, the field was officially opened, and students were invited to grab a commemorative Oakwood mini soccer ball to mark the milestone in true Hawk style.
