Oakwood Students Learn How To Make The Most Out Of Their Summers
On April 3, Mr. Kevin Krasnow, Oakwood High School director of college counseling, spoke with 9th and 10th grade students during Advisory about how to make the most of their summers. He offered a variety of suggestions, such as working a paid job, getting involved in community service, writing a collection of poems, learning a new musical instrument, starting a blog, or even developing a mobile app.
Mr. Krasnow encouraged students to select activities that align with their personal values and long-term goals or help deepen their interest in a particular academic or creative field. He emphasized the importance of intrinsic motivation—pursuing experiences because they are personally rewarding rather than for external recognition or awards.
He also discussed the advantages of attending a summer program at a college or university. These programs allow students to explore academic interests, build new skills or strengthen existing ones, meet peers who might inspire new passions, stay in a residence hall, become familiar with a college campus, and take college-level courses.
To support students in their planning, Mr. Krasnow introduced a comprehensive database, available on the Oakwood College Counseling website. It includes hundreds of summer opportunities in areas such as art, music, writing, journalism, business, economics, medicine, and STEM, as well as options for volunteering, travel, and internships.
Students left the session inspired and equipped with tools to create a summer that is both fulfilling and impactful.
