The Oakwood High School Boys Varsity Basketball team opened league play with a statement victory on January 5, rallying past Monterey 66–63 after trailing by 10 points in the fourth quarter. The win kept Oakwood undefeated at 10–0 overall and moved them to 1–0 in league action. Junior Bryce Smith-Keeney powered the comeback, finishing with a game-high 23 points on 7-for-15 shooting. He capped the rally by knocking down the game-winning three-pointer with 14 seconds remaining, giving Oakwood its first lead late in the contest. Junior Noah Lopez delivered a well-rounded performance with 14 points, seven rebounds, and four assists, providing steady leadership throughout the game. His ability to control the tempo and make timely plays helped Oakwood stay within striking distance during the second half. Junior Shaan Gill was a force on the interior, contributing 12 points, eight rebounds, and five blocks. His rim protection and physical presence disrupted Monterey’s offense during the crucial fourth-quarter stretch. Head coach Dave Clink praised his team’s effort and toughness following the win. “It was a great game for our team,” Clink said. “Monterey is a strong program every year, and to open league play with a hard-fought win against them was huge for us.” Senior Noah Harper echoed that sentiment, emphasizing the importance of the victory moving forward. “It was a great win to prove who we are as a team, and it sets the standard for the rest of the season,” Harper said.
