Wayback Wednesday: Cameron Helvey
This is Mr. Helvey’s first year as a faculty member for Oakwood School. However, this isn’t his first year at Oakwood. This Wayback Wednesday we highlight his time at Oakwood and share his goals as Oakwood’s Associate Head of School. He started in 1998, as a Junior Kindergartener and over the past couple of decades has attended a plethora of schools: Pinewood (our sister school), BYU, Columbia, Georgetown, and Vanderbilt University with the ultimate goal of obtaining a doctorate. Many of his teachers who taught him are still at Oakwood today. He says the energy is very similar to when he attended school as it is a supportive, special place that taught him to love the process of learning.
Before he came back to Oakwood, Mr. Helvey taught at many different places including Princeton, and was the Dean of Students in Tennessee. Travel has always been a big part of his life as he has the goal to visit all 50 states. At the moment, he has visited 38 and has lived internationally in places like Brazil and taught in China.
Now, as Oakwood’s Associate Head of School, Mr. Helvey is focused on developing strategies to achieve long-term goals that will positively impact the school community for years to come. In addition, he teaches a semester-long Constitutional Law class, combining his passion for U.S. History with his enthusiasm for engaging students in meaningful discussions about the nation’s founding principles. His office reflects this passion, with the United States Constitution prominently displayed on the wall—symbolizing his admiration for how the document evolves to address the needs of a changing nation.
Looking ahead, Mr. Helvey is eager to foster a vibrant learning environment where students feel supported and inspired, just as he did during his years at Oakwood. Whether he’s strategizing for the future, teaching Constitutional Law, or mentoring students, Mr. Helvey brings a wealth of knowledge, experience, and enthusiasm to his role.
