5th-Grade Science Students Learn A Sweet Lesson About Candy Categorization

Currently, 5th-grade students are diving into the hands-on Harry Potter-themed Wizard Training Program in science class. At the end of February, students received their Wizard Supply Boxes which included their Mixtures, Solutions, and Chemistry unit packet and their welcome letter. The students are participating in five different hands-on activities to further their knowledge of mixtures and solutions.

They began with house sorting, where students discovered which Hogwarts house they will be in for the unit's remainder. Then the students opened their supply box for the first time, received their wand, and earned their wand permit. The class then took a virtual field trip to Honeydukes candy store and participated in a mystery candy mixtures identification activity. A sweet lesson on the many ways we can categorize items and delve deeper to practice this important science skill.

Next, the students will participate in Potions Class, where they will learn how to create three potion solutions. The students will observe and take notes during the two last potion solutions demonstrations completed by Potions Professor Pompa to end the unit. Students will watch a color-changing potion during the final demonstration and then research the pH scale to discover how Professor Pompa will create her rainbow potions display.
