On Thursday, November 16 Don Leach's Intro to Linguistics class took a field trip to the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey (MIIS). At MIIS Oakwood students were able to explore different careers and opportunities that are available to people who study linguistics. Students met with Dr. Thor Sawin and his Language Analysis class to learn about syntax, the structure of language. After class, Dr. Sawin met with students to have a Q&A about linguists and their role in technology and AI.
Students then had the wonderful opportunity to meet with students who are training to become professional interpreters. MIIS has a reputation of being a school that produces interpreters for U.S. presidents, world leaders, and the United Nations. Oakwood students even had a chance to see what it's like to sit in the booths and give interpreting a try!
The final stop was a meeting with academic and career advisers to learn about the unique professional programs that MIIS offers and how graduates are prepared to be leaders in a variety of fields. They also discussed the school's dedication to solving problems through language learning and intercultural communication. Overall, students had an exciting day learning about interesting careers and the importance of language.
