Lower School Student Expectations

Oakwood is a wonderful place to learn and grow! In addition to academics, children are learning and developing social skills for life. We believe that most children want to be successful and in harmony with their world. We also recognize that everyone makes mistakes and deserves an opportunity to correct, learn and grow from them. Therefore, at Oakwood we exercise a philosophy of positive discipline - recognizing and celebrating appropriate behaviors while emphasizing the relationship between action and consequence. Just as in the “real” world, Oakwood students have certain rights and responsibilities.

Oakwood students have the right . . .

  • To be an active participant in a vibrant school community.
  • To learn in an environment that is conducive to achievement and personal growth.
  • To express themselves creatively and voice their opinions in a socially acceptable manner.
  • To feel secure and safe from verbal and physical harm while on school property and at all school-sponsored functions off school property.
  • To enjoy clean, well-maintained school facilities.
  • To fully understand the school's expectations regarding behavior, academics, and dress code.
  • To fully understand the consequences for violating these rules and expectations.

Oakwood students have a responsibility . . .

  • To take ownership of their actions, words, and academic work.
  • To remain safe by following school rules and teachers’ directions.
  • To be respectful of themselves, others, and the Oakwood environment.

Students involved in undesirable behaviors are subject to appropriate consequences commensurate to the offense. Happily, most unacceptable student behaviors are corrected by the child on his or her own with close guidance from the teacher in a timely manner. Note that parents may not be contacted on each and every offense as appropriate behaviors are being learned.

In the case of serious, consistent, or chronic inability to adhere to Oakwood expectations, parents will be notified and brought in to assist in the learning process.

In the rare instance of serious misconduct, for example, actions involving emotional or physical harm to another, suspension and expulsion are possible. Just as Oakwood strives to meet the needs of every student, we expect that each student will strive to adhere to the needs and expectation of their school community.

Oakwood parents have a responsibility . . .

  • To support the teacher and administration as they help guide a child onto the appropriate path, understanding that we all have the same goals for our students - a happy, successful school experience!
