We harmonize happily

Early Childhood

Your child astonishes you every day. Sometimes you gasp at her maturity, like her ability to remember and use words you’ve just read in her storybook. Other times her innocence brings tears to your eyes. She’s a child—wondrous, exceptional, vulnerable.

At Oakwood, we celebrate this amazing stage of life—we don’t rush it.

We take time to discover and nurture the talents and interests of every student. And we make sure your child feels safe and encouraged to discover herself. Oakwood is the place for her to seek out new experiences—shooting a three-point basket, playing a dragon on stage, asking a burning question, making a new best friend. Here, variety feels exciting. It’s a chance to learn something new, or to work out a solution. The way we see it, we have as much to learn from our children as they do from us. So let’s all learn together, as an extended family of exuberant, thoughtful explorers.

We are Morgan Hill’s independent, non-sectarian, college-preparatory school for students in preschool through grade 12. Our diverse community, thriving on an expansive campus, provides a home for an extended family of learners. Here, we share our unwavering commitment to a more intentional education. To learn more about our educational philosophy, download our Lower School Brochure. The best way for your family to meet our family is to tour our scenic Morgan Hill campus, meet our teachers and students, and observe our learning in action. Our family looks forward to meeting yours.

Campers in the Summer@Oakwood program recently had the opportunity to interact with Lower School Head and Principal, Mrs. Shales' farm animals! Mrs. Shales brought one of her goats and some of her chickens for the campers to meet. The children learned fun facts about each of the animals were taught about their particular needs and proper care. Campers enthusiastically asked questions as they pet and held the animals. Students Share Why They Love Oakwood Kindergarten

For Oakwood Kindergarten students, the end of the school year is bitter-sweet. Although they have grown tremendously during this school year and are excited about their promotion to first grade, these students have truly enjoyed their time in Kindergarten. Learning came alive in their classrooms. They built relationships with their classmates during playtime and bonded with their teachers, who supported them in their growth. We invite you to watch a video where these students share in their own words what they loved about Kindergarten this year.

Junior Kindergarten Student Create Traps for Leprechauns

In celebration of St. Patrick's Day, the Pre-Kindergarten classes built leprechaun traps. The students worked in teams to paint and decorate their traps in class, and then explained how they work. Before heading home on Tuesday, March 16th, the students set the traps in hopes of catching a leprechaun or two. However, when the students arrived at school on Wednesday, March 17th, they discovered great mischief: gold and green dust scattered about, and the traps had were sprung, but unfortunately, the leprechauns were too clever to be caught. Better luck next year, students!

Jr Kindergarten Students Learn About the Weather Through Hands-on Approach

For our youngest early childhood students, learning takes place through a hands-on, multi-sensory approach. For example, the Jr Kindergarten students have been learning about the various types of weather. They were taught about the different types of clouds and learned about a classroom favorite, the cumulonimbus. Each day they completed a daily weather journal practicing to write the new vocabulary words they learned to describe the weather. They also enjoyed a fun science experiment where they determined that as water gathers in the clouds and the water droplets get too heavy, it begins to rain. The lessons continued in art, where they created little thunder clouds, painted a colorful kite, and made a classroom book based on Eric Carle's book "Little Cloud." The teachers continued the lesson theme with many weather-related books, educational videos, and movement songs to round out their lessons.

The thing that stood out in the Early Childhood program here was that it was developmentally based and not just hardcore academics. It was the musical movement. It was the art. It was looking at the whole child and making sure that every aspect was focused upon throughout their day.

Oakwood Parent

I couldn't trust anybody with my kids more than I trust the folks at Oakwood. It is fantastic.

My son just blossomed here. Blossomed. He started off really shy and you should see him now.
