Oakwood offers a wide range of electives allowing students to explore new areas of interest and develop new skills while finding support for success now and in the future. The breadth and depth of these electives are part of what sets Oakwood apart. Every student benefits from working with faculty who are passionate experts and from the opportunity to collaborate with students across all middle school grades.

Unless otherwise indicated, electives are offered on a trimester basis, and offerings may change based on student interest.

Study Smart

Students are strongly encouraged to make elective selections from the dynamic offerings in the Middle School Elective Catalog. We invite students to take the opportunity to choose an elective that is of interest to them now, or to delve into a new topic that they are curious to explore!

BOOST periods are designated times during the school day, that every middle school student participates in, for students to work on homework and receive additional support or assistance from their teachers.

Study Smart periods are designed to support students managing heavy extracurricular commitments or struggling with academic proficiency. Study Smart is not intended for completing homework at school to avoid doing it at home. Students who request a Study Smart period will be asked to provide details on why the selection is essential for their unique situation.

You may rank four choices for each 4th and 8th-period time slot for each of the three trimesters, with "First Choice" being the choice you want most. Do not choose a class more than once in each trimester time slot (choosing Art Exploration for all four choices will not get you Art Exploration if the class is full; you will be placed in a class at random).

Middle School Schedule

Middle school students have an alternating schedule each day. Students have all 8 classes on Monday, and have a rotating block schedule Tuesday-Friday.

Electives take place during Period 4 and Period 8, and change each trimester. Core courses remain the same through the duration of the school year.

Middle school students are enrolled in the following courses:

Literature
Math
Physical Education
Science
Writing
Elective 1
Elective 2

In addition, all middle school students participate in:

BOOST: designated times during the school day for students to work on homework and receive additional support or assistance from their teachers
Advisory: during Advisory periods, students meet with their Advisor to review their academic progress and to engage in learning and practicing social-emotional skills

FAQ

When will I know which electives I have been placed in?

Schedules will be distributed to students and families just prior to the new school year, typically the Thursday prior to the first day of school.

Are there fees associated with electives?

Elective fees are included in tuition and will not be billed separately.

How is elective priority given?

Prior to the Middle School Elective Selection Form due date, placement in electives will be given first by grade level (8th grade, 7th grade, 6th grade), then by date and time of submission. Priority after the selection form deadline is by date and time of submission.

How are middle school electives chosen?

Middle school electives are carefully curated each school year, and student interest is valued and considered during the planning process. Students are encouraged to share their elective ideas with their Advisor.

Are electives each one trimester?

All electives are one trimester long, with the following exceptions:

Solution Seekers - Trimester 1 AND Trimester 2 (8th period)
Yearbook - Trimester 1 AND Trimester 2 (8th period)
Spanish I - Full Year (4th period, 8th grade only)
French I - Full Year 4th period, 8th grade only)
