Success: Oakwood Asks an Astronaut!
Ryan Beaulieu, class of 2026

On Friday, April 25, Oakwood School successfully contacted an astronaut aboard the International Space Station as part of an ARISS contact. Juniors Ryan Beaulieu and Robin Klingauf, along with elementary students Aarin and Wesley, operated the radio stations and were able to communicate with Dr. Jonny Kim aboard the ISS.

Each student played an important role in ensuring the smooth operation of the radio stations. The contact initially proceeded as planned, but a slight deviation caused a moment of panic among the radio operators. Fortunately, they were able to quickly resolve the issue and maintain a smooth connection. Students ranging from first to eleventh grade asked Dr. Kim questions live. Although the contact lasted only around ten minutes, students managed to ask 25 questions, prompting insightful answers from Dr. Kim.

Members of the Space Club were responsible for gathering student questions and organizing the schoolwide assembly. Meanwhile, students in the Middle School Broadcasting elective handled the livestream of the event.

These Oakwood students were selected to ask questions during the live ARISS contact with astronaut Jonny Kim, serving as the official student interviewers for this unforgettable experience.

Join our livestream on April 25 at 9:50 am as Oakwood School students make contact with Jonny Kim, an Expedition 73 astronaut aboard the International Space Station (ISS)!

ARISS

This experience is made possible through the Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) program, which connects students worldwide with astronauts in orbit. ARISS inspires students to pursue interests and careers in science, technology, engineering, and math through amateur radio communications opportunities with the ISS on-orbit crew, embracing Oakwood’s commitment to unbridled exploration.

Oakwood's contact will take place via amateur radio directly with the ISS as it passes over Oakwood School!

Fun Facts About Our ARISS Event

📡 A Global Network

As part of our spacecraft systems engineering program in the high school, we operate a satellite ground station that is part of the global SATNOGS network. It's been used by our students and by space scientists worldwide, and was the first ground station to hear a brand new satellite last year!

🛰️ High-Speed Chasing

Our main satellite station station (photographed) is composed of two large Yagi-Uda beams, which are directional antennas that must point at the space station as it passes above at 18,000 miles per hour.

🔨 Built by Students

Our main satellite station, including a computer-controlled rotator, was built by Oakwood's Space Club and will follow the ISS in real-time.

🎓 Licensed Student Operators

Two student radio teams will run the contact:

  • Ryan Beaulieu (Junior) & Wesley L (Grade 5)
  • Robin Klingauf (Junior) & Aarin V (Grade 5)

These students earned their radio licenses this year and will be adjusting our radio stations continuously to compensate for the Doppler effect, as the space station is traveling a large enough fraction of the speed of light for this to matter!

🎥 Live Coverage by Students

The Middle School Broadcasting elective is handling our video and livestream of the event.

🎤 Student Leaders Launching the Event

Our MCs for the event will be Dillon Hall (Junior, Space Club President) and Sunjana Banwait (Senior, Student Council President). They will guide us through all the action as we count down to to the ISS rising above our horizon!
