On May 10, 2018, Oakwood School officially broke ground on our campus expansion project! We are filled with much hope and anticipation as we look out onto the open spaces which are now busy with construction vehicles moving steel and preparing the land for what's to come.
To support our need to expand and enhance our campus, we have launched the Spreading Our Roots Campaign.
This campaign is the first of its kind for Oakwood, and mirrors what other independent, not-for-profit schools employ to fundraise for projects of this magnitude. As we ramp up our fundraising efforts to complete Oakwood's new liberal arts building, gymnasium, and playfield, ultimately advancing our school's ability to provide enhanced hands-on learning opportunities and expanded extracurricular offerings for our current students as well as sustaining this excellence decades into the future, we will look to our entire community for support. Please explore the information and updates below to learn about this ambitious project and how your family can help support this effort.
Spreading Our Roots is a carefully considered, long-term solution to the facilities needs of the students and staff on campus.
Oakwood will leverage gifts, allocate resources where they are needed most across the school, and ensure the availability of quality instructional and co-curricular spaces throughout the campus, just as we always have. The campaign effort will strongly position Oakwood School as a leader in educational instruction, formation of self, and extracirricular activities for generations to come.
As we have mentioned, our overall goal for the campaign is 100% parent participation. Our faculty, staff, and board have already achieved this. Spreading Our Roots is an ALL IN effort and that's where you come in.
Participation from each family is vital to our efforts. The size of the gift doesn't matter--your participation does.
We are so grateful to those who donated this past year and are excited for another banner year for Oakwood and the campaign.
Thank you for making this possible and your continued support of Oakwood.

Oakwood School celebrated the opening of the Gwendolyn Riches Liberal Arts Center on Monday, August 19, 2019, with a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony. Students, parents, faculty, staff, trustees, Morgan Hill Chamber of Commerce members, and other honored guests, gathered in the expanded quad outside the impressive new building.
Head of School Michelle Helvey welcomed the community on what was a very momentous day for Oakwood. She thanked all who participated in the campaign over the past year through various fundraising efforts in support of the Spreading Our Roots campaign.
The Liberal Arts Center, a two-story addition to the campus, houses state-of-the-art innovation in the form of a 200 seat theater, green room, dressing rooms, a Makers Lab, a student center, and many new classrooms and visual and performing arts spaces. The addition was made possible in part through the generosity of the school’s community of donors including parents, alumni, trustees, grandparents, and friends.
Mrs. Helvey thanked Larry Kent of Kent Construction, MJR Electric, Trinchero Construction, and Val’s Plumbing. Along with their amazing crews, they have made construction of the building and the Upper School Gymnasium as smooth as possible.
The Oakwood community looked on as Michelle Helvey officially cut the red ribbon with an oversized pair of scissors, marking the opening of the Liberal Arts Center and the 2019-2020 school year.
As we neared the end of our 20th Anniversary Celebrations, we looked back on fond memories of Oakwood's inception, its growth over the years, achievements across academics, the arts, and athletics, and so much more. Take a journey down memory lane with us as you enjoy the video below.
We tout the remarkable attributes of our student body often. This piece, produced and edited masterfully by our very own 8th grader, Tegan Leong, exemplifies the unmatched talents that our students share with us on a daily basis. We are forever grateful to Tegan for creating such a wonderful snapshot of our 20 years and a great representation of what the future holds for our campus and our students as we continue to spread our roots.
As we strive for 100% participation from our current parent community, this school year's fundraising focus, in lieu of our traditional Annual Giving efforts, is solely on raising money for our Campus Fund. Thank you to those who have already made their family's campaign gift. If you have any questions about your giving, please contact our development office.
Book of Gratitude
Because of the incredible generosity of parents, alumni, parents of alumni, grandparents, faculty, staff, and friends, Oakwood ended the 2017-2018 fundraising year with success. We are grateful that so many members of the Oakwood family make giving to the school a priority. Your support ensures the school continues to grow and thrive across the board. For that, and for all that you do for Oakwood, we thank you!
Please enjoy the video below, shown during our 2018 Roaring 20th Auction on November 10th. A Groundbreaking Ceremony was held to commemorate and officially launch the Spreading Our Roots: Oakwood School Campus Expansion project on Thursday, May 10th as part of our Spring Open House and Art Show. All students and their families were invited to join us as we marked this special moment.
The event started with a few words from our Head of School, Michelle Helvey, who shared what the school and this project meant to her and why the expansion was necessary, followed by remarks from Larry Kent of Kent Construction, who built the Oakwood high school building and is completing this important project for us. Ted Helvey spoke next about the history of our school and campus and how it belongs to all of us. The administration, along with some honored guests and students, donned hard hats and shovels and ceremoniously broke ground, while confetti cannons showered participants with colorful confetti. Attendees were given Spreading Our Roots: Oakwood School Campus Expansion seed packets as mementos of this historic celebration. Oakwood high school student Ashwin Viswesvaran took photos and videos of the event and we will share his finished compilation as soon as it is ready.
This campaign will be the first of its kind for Oakwood, and will mirror what other independent, not-for-profit schools employ to fundraise for projects of this magnitude.
Watch Us Grow
We invite you to explore the photos and drone footage below to see how the projects progress. Oakwood School is steadily making headway on construction of the new Liberal Arts Building and Gymnasium, which are set to be completed for the 2019-2020 school year.
This campaign is a resounding call to invest in our remarkable school and make it possible for future generations of Oakwood students and faculty to excel and discover, to imagine and pioneer, to lead and transform. We will unite as a community to create an even better Oakwood and amplify our impact on the world—both locally and globally.
Participation by all parents, alumni, faculty, staff, and friends will be vital to our success. Please consider supporting Oakwood by making a meaningful gift to Spreading Our Roots. Each gift—no matter the size—makes a difference and moves us closer to achieving our goals.
Major naming rights are available for spaces throughout the Liberal Arts Building, Gymnasium, and Playfield, as well as known and loved existing spaces across the Oakwood campus. This is a wonderful chance to leave your family's legacy on our campus.

Many Oakwood families and their friends work for companies that offer a matching gift program. These corporate philanthropy programs vary from company to company, but generally they will match some portion of their employees’ donations to qualified charitable institutions such as schools. As an accredited school and a not-for-profit public benefit corporation, Oakwood qualifies for nearly every corporate matching program.
Oakwood relies on philanthropic giving from parents and the wider community and students benefit from gifts large and small. By taking advantage of your corporate matching gift program, you can maximize the value of your gift at no additional cost. You may contact email@example.com for assistance or more information.
In addition to gifts of cash or securities, there are a variety of other gift vehicles that enable donors to make larger gifts than would otherwise be possible. Such gifts often generate substantial tax savings and can generate increased income as well. Each of these gifts must be tailored to a donor’s specific situation. Please call the Development Office at 408.782.7177 ext. 255 for more information, as well as consulting with your attorney and other advisors.
Gifts of Real Estate or Appreciated Property
Many donors find it attractive to give appreciated property—homes, other types of real estate, businesses, personal property, etc.—because of the potential tax benefits.
The simplest way for donors to arrange for a gift from their estate is to include a bequest provision to Pinewood School in their will.
Life Income Plans
These gift plans allow donors to give assets to Oakwood School while retaining an income for themselves or others. In addition to providing income (often tax-free), these gifts offer a number of tax and other advantages.
Gifts of Life Insurance
Many people own some form of life insurance that was purchased to provide protection that is no longer needed, even though the policy is still in force and may have significant cash value. Such policies can form the basis of a gift to Oakwood School.
This is your chance to create a lasting legacy for the future of Oakwood School. There are naming opportunities available at an array of donation levels. Consult the lists below to see where you can leave an indelible mark on our beloved campus. Gifts can be pledged over three to five years to maximize your contribution and the impact you have on Oakwood.
